FC Würzburger Kickers rise from the Landesliga Bayern (6th tier) 

FC Würzburg Kickers is a German association club which presently competes in the German 3.Liga, one tier below the 2.Bundesliga. The club was established 1907 and has mostly competed in the lower tiers of the German football pyramid until its recent promotion into the 3.Liga.

The club plays in the Flyalarm Arena, with a maximum capacity of 14,500, although it is not fully seated. The grounds have since undergone renovation(2005) and during its recent promotional campaign into the 3.Liga. The club enjoys a local derby with lower tier Würzburg FV, presently competing in the Bayernliga Nord (5th tier).

Having suffered relegation from the Bayernliga (5th tier) in 2008-09, Würzburg kickers would go on and compete in the Landesliga (6th tier) for the next 3 campaigns. Ultimately in 2011-12 it would win the league and earn promotion directly into the newly established Regionalliga Bayern (4th tier) for the 2012-13 season.

During its first two season in the Regionalliga Bayern, the club would finish in 10th and 11th place, establishing itself as a mid-table club. During the 2014-15 the club earned the right for promotion in the 3.Liga after finishing top of the table in the Regionalliga Bayern [The winner of the German Regionalliga’s enter into a promotional playoff (regional match-ups predetermined by the federation). FC Würzberg Kickers would face 1. FC Saarbrücken (runner-up of the Regionalliga Südwest) in a home-away fixure that resulted in a 1-1 overall scoreline, forcing a penalty shootout that would determine the promotional spot into the German 3.Liga.]

Würzburg is the hometown of NBA professional Dirk Nowitzki. Nowitzki has since retired from international competition and competes solely with the Dallas mavericks.

Having won the Bavarian cup during the 2013-14 campaign (beating out fellow Regionalliga Bayern club SV Schalding-Heining), Würzburg qualified for the national cup competition the following season. The Kickers would go on to host 2.Bundesliga side Fortuna Düsseldorf in front of 10,500 spectators with a final score of 3-2 for the home side. In the 2nd round Wurzburg would not be as fortunate as they would lost 0-1 at home to then 1.Bundesliga side Eintracht Braunschweig.

American Born defender in Würzburg

Würzburg Kickers is the present club of 26-year-old American-born central defender Royal-Dominique Fennell. Born in California, Fennell is the son of an American military serviceman and a German mother. Fennell grew up in Germany and came up thru the ranks of Stuttgart Kickers. Stuttgart kickers is a German association club that has mostly competed in the then Regionalliga Süd. The club would earn promotion to the 3.Liga. at the conclusion of the 2011-12 season.

By 2011, Fennell would make one appearance for the Red, White and Blue (U23 Olympic qualifying squad), having earned a call up under manager Caleb Porter. Royal was not released from his club as a conflict of interest arose in the clubs promotional ambition. Nonetheless the USA failed to qualify for the Olympics.

IFX Alumni Zach Mahon, faced off against FC Würzburg Kickers during the 2012-13 Regionalliga Bayern season.VfL Frohnlach would go on to lose the fixture at home 2-4; and at the conclusion of the season was relegated from the Regionalliga Bayern.
